Artist’s Statement: recent paintings and prints
Art making begins with a fascination: a desire to look closer, to connect to the image, to unveil a mystery. My fascination is in positioning the human figure in space.
The figure in space is replete with meaningful signs. Questions arise.
What does the gesture of the body reveal? What does the clothing tell us about society? How can I connect or how can I BE this figure? What feelings, what thoughts arise? What kind of meaningful or mute space links or separates two figures? The gestural body is to me a universal sign of our humanity, cruel or kind: our tenuous hold on realities, grasping or letting go, wanting, not wanting, and the ubiquitous doubt. The gaze of the eyes outward to the future or inward to the past. Signs, directions, meanings all expressed by the body in space.
